With her sights set on being a CEO of a big company, Roberta da Costa enrolled on the UCT online Postgraduate Diploma in Management in Marketing programme to secure a skill set that's up for the challenge.
Tell us a bit about yourself.
I’m a Public Relations Graduate, passionate about customer service as I served in this field for almost 10 years. I’m currently heading Team Namibia - this is the organization mandated to promote locally produced products and services. I love the outdoor life and as a family woman, travelling is an important aspect of quality time.
What made you decide to apply for the programme?
I need to complement my PR qualification and work experience.
How many hours a week do you spend on learning?
Not as much as I should. I just changed jobs so the second semester didn’t start off as well as I hoped, but I’m hard at work catching up. A good day will see me having 2-3 hours reading and working through course content.
What are you enjoying most about the online learning experience? Are you enjoying the Virtual Learning Environment?
I simply love the online discussion forums, I’ve learned a lot through the opinions and experiences of my fellow mates. Also, the course videos are simply fantastic.
Has the course met your expectations?
So far most definitely, I will be a typical student and complain about the workload at times, but overall it’s an excellent programme.
How do you think the programme would impact your career advancement? Not only in terms of skills, but also because of the University certificate behind your name?
It already has. My new appointment as CEO of Team Namibia was definitely boosted by the fact that I’m studying at UCT and I believe this is only the beginning. I see myself as CEO of a gigantic company in the next 3 – 5 years.
Do you plan any further studies after this has finished?
I would love to do my Masters, and most probably through UCT again – if they can design a similar Master programme as is with the Postgrad, it will be a fantastic, but for now let me get the postgrad behind me first.
How do you plan to conquer part-time studies while you manage your career and/or family and social obligations?
I’ve put a lot of plans in place. For example, I appointed full-time house help. This helps in freeing my time so I can attend to kids and then studies. Obviously the social life takes a huge dip, but that doesn't bother me much.
Do you have any major highlights from the programme so far? If so, what were they?
I did really well in my first semester, and that is a BIG achievement for me.
